Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Expat Therapy Amsterdam

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This evidence-based approach aims to identify and modify negative thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviors. By recognizing these patterns, individuals can learn to challenge and replace unhelpful thoughts with more constructive ones. CBT is widely used to treat a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This type of therapy is often perceived as too dry and impersonal. However, during my years of training I have come to appreciate the great tools that it can offer. I am committed to using what works, while keeping you central.

How Therapy Can Help

CBT utilizes various techniques that facilitate understanding and change. Some of the core components include:
  • Thought Records: This technique helps you track and analyze your thoughts and feelings, providing insight into patterns that may contribute to distress.
  • Behavioral Activation: This method encourages you to engage in enjoyable or meaningful activities to combat feelings of depression and increase motivation.
  • Exposure Therapy: Commonly used for anxiety disorders, this technique involves gradual exposure to feared situations to reduce avoidance behaviors and anxiety responses.
  • Skills Training: CBT may include teaching skills for managing stress, improving communication, and enhancing problem-solving abilities.
Through CBT, you can gain valuable insights into your thought processes, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and learn to approach challenges with a more balanced perspective. Together, we can work towards breaking the cycle of negative thinking and building a more fulfilling life.
